You can keep this suit of lights.

I just closed my blog after over seven years. This seems appropriate, enjoy!

this really does happen sometimes

One of the odd facts of rural life, at least, where I live, is that people DO herd cows here, and they ARE allowed to drive cattle on surface streets (even the 55 MPH ones that lead from highway to highway.) And once in a great while you may actually find yourself stopped on a 55 MPH road, behind a cattle drive.

Or, in my case, watch one happen from your front yard. On the far side of across-the-street, earlier this afternoon, I was startled to see several cows meandering down the side of the (55 MPH) road. As more and more of them appeared, what started as "...uh, did they get loose?" turned into "oh, cattle drive", so I snapped some pictures. Cows and cars and cowboys on horses. Enjoy.

Slow-moving plant.

I swear I saw a very similar sign in Cornwall a number of years ago.

Lonely as God, white as a winter moon

First decent snow on Mt. Shasta this year. I love it when it looks like this.

starfish flower (is no more)

My husband tracked down our scary flower earlier this week — it is Stapelia, a flowering succulent nicknamed "starfish flower" or... "carrion flower". The flowers of most species, including ours here at home, start to reek like... carrion... which is why we disposed of the flowers a few days ago. It made our living room smell like... er, well, it smelled unpleasant. So that's what it is.

Specifically, it is Stapelia gigantea. *This* Stapelia gigantea:

The flowers of certain species, most notably Stapelia gigantea, can reach 41 cm (16 inches) in diameter when fully open.

Eheh..................... @_@

(This picture is not my plant, it's from Wikipedia. Note the scale of hand to... flower.)

always two there are

A master and an apprentice. The second bloom opened entirely over a period of 1-2 hours (see yesterday's pics.) Here's what it looked like when it was done. Some close-ups to give you an idea of how fuzzy they are...

Scary Plant, Jr.

The second flower opened one petal this afternoon — it's poised to take over the house.

Scary flower, by daylight

Took some more pictures just now of the scary cactus flower. First picture also shows the succulent in question, and you can see at the bottom the ominous presence of a SECOND scary flower-in-progress. I hope it doesn't eat the cat.

Feed me, Seymour!

We've had this succulent plant for 7-8 years now — bought it at a Biology Club plant sale in college — and this fall it decided to flower. Today when I got home, I noticed that the mysterious (enormous!) flower bud had opened, revealing... the weirdest flower I've ever seen? o_O;
