starfish flower (is no more)

My husband tracked down our scary flower earlier this week — it is Stapelia, a flowering succulent nicknamed "starfish flower" or... "carrion flower". The flowers of most species, including ours here at home, start to reek like... carrion... which is why we disposed of the flowers a few days ago. It made our living room smell like... er, well, it smelled unpleasant. So that's what it is.

Specifically, it is Stapelia gigantea. *This* Stapelia gigantea:

The flowers of certain species, most notably Stapelia gigantea, can reach 41 cm (16 inches) in diameter when fully open.

Eheh..................... @_@

(This picture is not my plant, it's from Wikipedia. Note the scale of hand to... flower.)

Stranded on an alien planet looking only for a place to lay its succulent head, and you throw it out. For shame!

Hey, the plant can stay — it's only the rotting-meat-smelling flowers that had to go. (And I'm starting to rethink repotting it/letting it get bigger, in future, lol.)
